Bedroom Transformation

My bedroom is such an important place for me as I spend a lot of my free time in it - sleeping or relaxing - and its always been so important to me to make it as nice as I could possibly afford to. But recently over the past few months of finishing university, travelling around the west coast of America and starting a new job, I really let my bedroom become a bit of a mess. One of the biggest problems with how my bedroom looked before I decorated was the smoke damage left from lighting candles in my room. Because my room is so small and three out of four of the walls were white there was a lot of black smoke damage across the ceiling and around the window frame where the smoke from my candles had drifted up which was really noticeable. I have never really considered myself to light a lot of candles or a lot but this was the only realistic explanation I could think of for the dark marks (see in photos below). I'm now in a more of a comfortable routine with my new job and have a bit more spare time so I decided to take action with my dad and decorate my bedroom. Before I do anything in life I create a Pinterest board, this is so important to do for me, because I feel I tend to dive into things head first without really thinking too much about how it will all look together - some of my past bedroom wallpaper/paint choices have been extremely questionable. Some of my Pinterest inspiration...

The 'before' images of my bedroom -

As you can see in the images theres a lot of dark smoke damage around the side of the window on the white window wall. The fourth wall that isn't visible in the pictures is just my built in mirrored wardrobe which I forgot to take photos of because it won't be changing during this process, but I will take photos of that in my after photos so that you can see the room as a whole.

The 'after' images of my bedroom -

The fourth wall of my room is a double mirrored wardrobe and is pretty much the entire length of this wall!

  • The orange flower framed is my own illustration which I sell as a print, for commissions like this or something a bit different, email me at eviewarddesigns@outlook.com

I don't think my room will ever be completed fully because I'm always going to be buying more things and changing it up every few weeks, but for now I am so so happy with this current colour scheme and the white walls allowing me to change it up when ever I feel like it. I love how fresh and clean it feels and I can't believe how bad I let it get before now!

If you've recently done a post about decorating a bedroom let me know in the comments because I would love to read about it and see some before and after photos!

Blackpool

Blackpool was once a favourite place of mine, where I would visit for a night or two with a huge group of family and friends when I was about 10 years old. Over 10 years later my Nanna requested that a few of us go back for a night this summer, so we decided to drive down and stay over in the Blackpool Football Club hotel. I wasn't sure I would enjoy it as much as I did when I was younger, because it was a much more popular place then and obviously I have changed quite a lot since I was 10, the same things that I enjoyed then have changed now. All week the weather had been really lovely, and of course the weekend comes when we are due to set off to Blackpool and it begins to pour down. We tried not to let it stop us doing things, we really wanted to go to the Blackpool Pleasure Beach on the Saturday but unfortunately due to the rain being so heavy it was just not possible, so this is going to be one of the shortest posts ever.

We decided to head over to the Blackpool Tower on the Friday after we checked into the hotel, it had stopped raining (for about half an hour) so we had a look round the outside then proceeded to go inside to the ballroom.

The ballroom in the tower is really beautiful, during the day a piano player plays music and people can get up and dance on the ballroom floor, which was really nice to watch, some of the dancers were really professional! You can also get afternoon tea there whilst watching the dancers, we didn't this time but looking around at other people that had, the cakes looked really lovely. Theres also a bar with alcoholic drinks available if thats more your thing!
On the Friday night we decided to go to see Funny Girls, and it lived up to its name. The dancers were great and DJ Zoe was hilarious, keeping the crowd entertained in the breaks between the dancing. The stage was absolutely beautiful, and everything was pink! Which I thoroughly enjoyed and had to take a photo of.
Please feel free to leave any comments, especially if you have been to Blackpool before and have had a similar experience!

Textiles and Surface Design Class of 2016 - Graduation

After a long, long three years, I have finally graduated from Cleveland College of Art and Design with a BA (hons) in Textiles and Surface Design. This was a day I had been looking forward to for a very long time and I can safely say it was the proudest day of my life so far. To finally feel that I have completed my degree was overwhelming and I was so happy my closest family could be there to watch it all happen. I feel that there is a lot of misconception around design degrees, I often find people asking what a Textiles and Surface Design degree actually entails and presuming it isn't a 'real' degree. The final year of my degree concentrated on a Final Major Project - 60% in fact - the rest of my results were based upon my dissertation, Minor Project and Professional Studies module. This was a lot of work which seemed overwhelming at the beginning of the year and I still find myself looking back now and wondering how on earth I managed to complete it all.

"To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong."

A passion I have discovered from completing this degree is blogging and social media, I feel that now I'm at the end of my degree I can say for certain that I have found my strengths, weaknesses and what I'm passionate about. One of my strengths/passions that developed throughout my degree, particularly in my final year, is blogging and social media and I really want to now focus on spreading the word about my designs. A dream of mine is to set up my own business, as part of my third year professional studies module we had to create our own business which was graded, and I would love to take this further and give it my full attention now that I have finally graduated. As a 22 year old still living at home with no major responsibilities I feel now would be the perfect time to give it a go, especially with everything I learnt at university still fresh in my mind. Please let me know in the comments if you have your own business or have any tips for a business just starting up.

Words of advice before deciding to study a Textiles and Surface Design degree

  • Be prepared for 'constructive criticism', this happens on a daily basis and you will be told frequently to change your work. Try not to take this to heart.
  • Be ready to work for free, internships are so important so that you can get a real idea of what being a designer is like in a real working environment - the hours are long and most are unpaid but I can't express how helpful and informative my work placements were (I completed work placements in Paris and London).
  • Make sure you make copies of all of your work, emailing it to yourself each time you make a change - you will thank me in the long run.
  • Time management is so important, if you let one assignment slip, they soon all hoard up very easily and you will find yourself drowning in work!
  • Be prepared to spend most of your student loan on paper.
  • Self promotion is key, you have to spread the word about your work because no one else is going to!

"Let go of the past and go for the future. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you imagined."

Please feel free to leave any comments, especially if you have just graduated too!
